June 8, 2020: It was an honor for H.E. Ambassador Dr. Bashir Mohabbat to meet with his longtime friend, and longtime friend of Afghanistan, H.E. Mr. Katsuhiko Takahashi, Director-General and Assistant Minister for the Middle Eastern and African Affairs Bureau, as well as Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan of MOFA Japan at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Headquarters in Tokyo. Joining H.E. Ambassador Dr. Mohabbat for the meeting was Mr. Najibullah Safi, Counselor and DCM for the Embassy.

H.E. Dr. Mohabbat thanked H.E. Mr. Takahashi for making the time in his busy schedule to meet with him. On behalf of the people and Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, expressed sincere gratitude to the people and Government of the noble nation of Japan for their recent 8-million USD in assistance to Afghanistan in order to fight the spread of COVID-19. He further thanked Japan for proving their friendship over the years by providing steadfast and benevolent support to Afghanistan as it has striven for peace and progress. In return, H.E. Mr. Takahashi thanked H.E. Dr. Mohabbat for meeting with him again as well as for his kind words.

Additionally, H.E. Dr. Mohabbat thanked the Japanese Government for their congratulatory messages regarding the collaborative agreement reached between H.E. Dr. Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, and Hon. Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, Chairman of the High Council for National Reconciliation, as well as Japan's agreement to support and assist in the talks between the Afghan Government and the Taliban. He assured that the Afghan Government would be insistent in their preservation of Afghanistan's progressive achievements over the past 19 years and continue to uphold the Constitution and the rights for all that it provides. Further, he updated him on the many developments in the peace talks Afghanistan has recently been participating in, as well as discussed the upcoming conference on Afghanistan. H.E. Mr. Takahashi was delighted to receive the progress report of the advances being made in the Afghan-owned and Afghan-led peace process and reassured him that Japan values its strong and friendly bilateral tie with Afghanistan and as such would continue to stand with Afghanistan well into the future. All those present further discussed topics of mutual interest.
