It is with deep sadness that the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in Tokyo announces that Sardar (Prince) Abdul Wali (pictured right), a senior member of Afghanistan's former royal family, passed away at 84 years of age on Monday, June 30, 2008. Son of Marshall Shah Wali Khan and cousin and son-in-law to former King Mohammad Zahir Shah, he held various high-level positions during his time in the Afghan Army. After living in Rome for many years, Sardar Abdul Wali returned to Afghanistan in 2002 with former King Mohammad Zahir Shah and played a key political role over the past six years.
